March is National Women’s History Month, a time for us to celebrate the countless women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality, justice, and opportunity. The theme for this year’s Women’s History Month is “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”
While the theme encourages recognition of women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling, including print, radio, television, stage, screen, blogs, podcasts, and more, it also gives us an opportunity to honor the women within our union family and the labor movement who “tell” the stories of all workers through organizing, bargaining, and inspiring workers to fight for justice.
From championing better workplace conditions to cutting back the 12-hour day and demanding equal pay across racial lines, women have played and continue to play an invaluable role in the labor movement.
This year, we would like to recognize and honor all the women who have devoted their lives and talents to reflecting the human condition and advocating on behalf of our workers daily. Thank you for your dedication and shared desire to give a voice to the voiceless.
During this month, let’s reaffirm our commitment to continue advancing rights and opportunities for women (and girls) and take the time to evaluate how all of us can do our part to advance gender equity and equality through opportunity and access.
